Apple will not release its Apple Intelligence AI product in the European Union in 2024 due to "regulatory uncertainty." This is reported by CNBC.
In addition to Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring and SharePlay functions will not be available to users from the EU. The company believes that "DMA compatibility requirements may force the integrity of products to be violated, this will pose a threat to the privacy and security of user data."
iPhone Mirroring allows you to see and control the smartphone screen on a Mac. With SharePlay, you can transfer an image from the iPad or iPhone screen to another device and thus synchronize watching media files, movies, TV shows while talking with friends, relatives and colleagues.
The EU adopted the DMA in 2023 due to concerns about the monopoly of Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and ByteDance. According to regulators, tech giants do not allow small firms to compete with them. Among other things, DMA requires that the basic functions of gadgets work on competing ecosystems and devices.
Also, large firms are prohibited:
give preference to your own products instead of competitors' products;combine personal data from different services;use information from third-party sellers to compete with them. The company on the list must allow users to download applications from competing platforms.
Apple said it will work with European authorities "in an attempt to find a solution that will allow it to provide features to EU customers without compromising their security."
In June, Apple announced the integration of ChatGPT into its devices and the large-scale AI initiative Apple Intelligence. The new solution means that the software will not appear for users from 27 EU countries, but will be available for other jurisdictions and only on some devices in American English.
Recall that Apple held talks with Meta about a potential partnership in the field of AI. The company also communicates with other major developers: Google, Anthropic and Perplexity.
