Research: scammers are more likely to choose Coinbase among crypto brands from the USA

The Coinbase cryptocurrency exchange has been included in the list of American brands that are most often imitated by scammers to deceive their victims. This is evidenced by the Mailsuite report.

According to analysts, from January 2020 to March 2024, the Coinbase brand was used in 416 scam schemes and phishing attacks.

According to CoinMarketCap, Coinbase is the second largest centralized crypto exchange in the world with a daily trading volume of over $1.8 billion.

In the CoinGecko ranking, the platform has the highest "trust" score along with Binance, Bybit and OKX.

In total, Mailsuite analysts studied 1.14 million incidents in which fraudsters posed as a well-known company or organization more than 249,000 times.

Among traditional firms, Facebook/Meta became the most popular American brand among scammers — it was mentioned in 10,457 registered cases of fraud. The IRS was involved in 9762 incidents, and Apple in 9110. This is followed by Amazon (8919), Steam (4833) and Microsoft (4518).

In the international arena, attackers prefer Japanese firms. The leaders were the mobile operator au (18,964 cases) and the JR East railway company (18,250).

Earlier, SlowMist experts reported that the TON ecosystem was under a large-scale attack by phishers. According to their information, malicious links and malicious bots are distributed in Telegram groups, in particular under the guise of airdrop announcements.

Recall that the Ethereum Foundation warned about the compromise of the SendPulse email mailing service, as a result of which phishing emails began to arrive to users.
