Microsoft will invest $2.2 billion in new infrastructure for cloud computing and artificial intelligence in Malaysia in the next few years.
The funds will be directed to:
artificial intelligence training for 200,000 people;Creation of a national center of excellence in the field of AI;Strengthening the country's cybersecurity capacity;support the growth of the community of local developers."Our investments in digital infrastructure and training will help Malaysian businesses, communities and developers apply the latest technologies to ensure inclusive economic growth and innovation across the country," said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
According to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, investments will be a key pillar in achieving the government's goal of expanding artificial intelligence capabilities in the country.
Microsoft said that the proposed national AI center will facilitate the introduction of this technology in key industries and the public sector, while complying with regulatory requirements.
"Together with Microsoft, we hope to create more opportunities for our businesses, as well as high—paying jobs, using the AI revolution to accelerate Malaysia's growth through digital technology," said Trade Minister Zafrul Aziz.
Microsoft sees Southeast Asia, with its population of over 600 million people, as a growing market and a potential place to develop AI products. According to Kearney, by 2030, the share of artificial intelligence in the region's GDP will be about $1 trillion, of which Indonesia will account for $366 billion, and Malaysia for $115 billion.
On May 1, Microsoft announced the creation of a new regional data center in Thailand and other initiatives in Southeast Asia.
Recall that on April 30, Microsoft announced an investment of $1.7 billion in Indonesia's AI infrastructure.
