Rice trading and a tablet without the Internet: Sam Bankman-Fried on life in prison

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), who was sentenced to 25 years in prison, said in an interview with Puck News that he is doing well at the Brooklyn Detention Center (MDC).

While waiting for the appeal to be considered, in July the entrepreneur started trading rice. According to him, there are much more arbitrage opportunities in prison compared to his previous life as a high-frequency trader.

"Smelling [in the opinion of cellmates] of shit," rice and beans form the basis of the SBF diet, which has retained its commitment to veganism in prison.

The journalists noted that Bankman-Fried "lost a lot of weight", having lost 11 kg. He became "less potbellied, less manic, less fussy," without bags under his eyes.

During the conversation, he "almost all the time" looked the interviewer in the eye, which was a rarity for him in the past. SBF admitted that he "began to skillfully pretend," and he is doing well.

Along with 35 other prisoners, half of whom are allegedly government-affiliated murderers, Bankman-Fried is in a large open dorm-style room.

He is reportedly very bored, and the only entertainment is four TVs and a tablet that is not connected to the Internet, on which he plays games.

SBF is not worried about his safety, but sleeps poorly as other convicts wake him up to ask about his rice for exchange.

The FTX founder talks to a new lawyer "for an hour almost every weekday," and approved prescription drugs help him "think clearly."

In an interview, Bankman-Fried complained that he was pinned on by the FTX collapse.

He called his only blunder negligence, which made the platform "vulnerable to the banking crisis and insidious actions of competitors." SBF is convinced that civil rather than criminal punishment would be reasonable.

The journalists noted that Bankman-Fried "still does not believe that he committed any crimes" and considers himself innocent, who failed to sufficiently negotiate with prosecutors. He was "not very apologetic" about the $8 billion damage to customers.

SBF stated that the army of lawyers to whom it handed over FTX blamed it for the collapse of the platform. According to the founder of the exchange, if he had retained the leadership, he would have been able to avoid bankruptcy and turn it into a prosperous company worth $ 80 billion.

Bankman-Fried complained that he did not make sufficient efforts to find a better specialist than Caroline Ellison to transfer the management of Alameda Research or did not continue combining this role with the CEO of FTX, ignoring the advice of lawyers.

The publication recalled that SBF can be transferred from MDC to another correctional institution. With high chances, it will be the state of California, where his parents live. In this case, relocation from Brooklyn by prison bus can take up to four months.

Recall that in April, Bankman-Fried signed a settlement agreement with a group of exchange clients to help in the prosecution of the company's famous promoters.
