A hacker who owned $27 million worth of bitcoins was detained in Spain

Spanish police have detained a 22-year-old Briton who is suspected of hacking two large casino chains in the fall of 2023. This is reported by local media.

According to investigators, the hacker under the pseudonym tylerb is a key member of the Scattered Spider group and was behind the hacking of corporate accounts, gaining illegal access to millions of dollars. Spanish police said that at one point the suspect controlled $27 million worth of bitcoins.

Cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs, citing sources close to the investigation, writes that the detainee's real name is Tyler Buchanan.

According to Vx-underground, the cybercriminal specialized in swapping SIM cards.

In addition to the MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment casino chains, Scattered Spider is said to be involved in attacks on LastPass, DoorDash, Mailchimp and about 130 other well-known organizations over the past two years.

The arrest was made on the basis of an FBI warrant at the moment when tylerb boarded a flight from Palma de Mallorca to Italy.

During the arrest, the police seized a laptop and a mobile phone.

Earlier, ForkLog reported that the US authorities had filed charges against the alleged owners of the Empire Market darknet marketplace with a turnover of $430 million.
