Chingari (GARI) is among the biggest short video-sharing platforms in India. It launched in October 2021 and has quickly grown its user base and audience. The project is backed by prominent crypto venture capitalists, including Alameda Research and Republic Capital. Just over a year after launch, Chingari rolled out its own token, GARI. That token was the first cryptocurrency to be listed simultaneously on six major exchanges, and it was later added to additional leading exchanges. Built on the Solana platform, its main goal is to reward users for publishing original content and keep viewers engaged through transparent features, exclusive materials, and direct involvement in platform activities in a decentralized environment.
Chingari (GARI) connects its token with the platform to support Web3 social networking. The token enables users to build their own commercial presence, spanning physical products, NFT development, and the ability for fans to directly fund their preferred content creators on the platform. GARI is used to coordinate and complete transactions between counterparties, participate in governance, increase interaction on the platform, and help draw more users in. There are three main ways to earn GARI on Chingari. Users can earn by taking part in in-app games and by watching videos shared on the platform. The platform also rewards users for leaving comments and liking content, with recipients receiving GARI tokens. For creators, the process is to convert their videos into NFTs on the platform and monetize them.
While the app is still centered around and mainly used across South Asia, its user adoption remains very high. Marketed as “India's TikTok,” Chingari ranks among the most downloaded apps on the Google App Store in India and is considered the country’s most popular social media app, ahead of competitors like Tiktok, Youtube, and Instagram.
GARI has strong liquidity since Chingari already had a large audience before launching a blockchain initiative. In addition, the token’s approval for trading on India’s major crypto exchange CoinDCX expanded access further, supporting even better liquidity.
On the Chingari blockchain, users can earn tokens for creating or watching content. The concept was inspired by play-to-earn games and adapted to social media.
In addition to trading the Chingari (GARI) token and holding it for long-term investment, owners can also use it for other purposes, including paying for goods and services. The creators aim for broad adoption of this cryptocurrency across industries and for it to become one of the most commonly used cryptocurrencies in India.
