Built on the Solana blockchain, Serum operates as a decentralized exchange software. It aims to address the issues of centralization, capital inefficiency, and liquidity problems across the current DeFi landscape. Serum was launched in 2020 and offers a comprehensive product suite designed to help maximize potential DeFi opportunities across the Solana network.
SRM is the platform’s native cryptocurrency.
The Serum protocol is designed to offer an alternative to the automated market making (AMM) model. It features a decentralized order book system that is crucial to the platform’s operations. Unlike an AMM, the platform does not rely on liquidity pools from which traders can buy and sell crypto. Instead, it consists of smart contracts that are designed to copy the way traditional exchanges work by matching buyers with sellers. This matching happens automatically via smart contracts and provides traders with a flexible approach to trading, including pricing and order sizes. Fees for trades are payable in SRM.
Serum is cross-chain compatible. This means that traders can use the platform to trade tokens native to other platforms via cross-chain swaps. This includes Ethereum and Polkadot. Likewise, decentralized projects built on other chains can access the tools provided by Serum.
The SRM token functions as a utility token of the Serum network. It can be used to pay for transaction fees and holders are entitled to discounted fees if they use SRM for fees. It is also worth noting that the SRM platform has another native currency, the MegaSerum token (MSRM). Users who have locked 1,000,000 SRM are entitled to swap the amount for 1 MSRM token. Holding MSRM gives better rewards than holding the equivalent in SRM. Furthermore, in order to operate a node and help secure the network, users must hold at least 1 MSRM token.
SRM is available for trading on the following CEXs and DEXs listed here. The most popular platforms with the highest liquidity are Binance, AscendEX, OKX and Gate.io. The price of SRM will vary depending on the choice of exchange and overall market conditions. Please view the SRM price charts on this page for up-to-date and historic market price data.
