Decred is a blockchain network designed to support a community-led, sustainable ecosystem with open governance. The concept for the project began in 2013, when developers created the code by drawing from Bitcoin. While Decred retains many of Bitcoin’s core characteristics, it has introduced changes intended to boost involvement in governance. The mainnet went live in 2016.
DCR is the network’s native digital currency, with a maximum supply of 21,000,000.
Decred combines Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake to keep the network running reliably. Proof-of-Work miners protect the chain by verifying transactions and earn 10% of block rewards. Proof-of-Stake participants help drive Decred’s governance, and users must stake DCR tokens to validate and finalize transactions.
Those who stake can also submit and vote on a range of subjects connected to platform development. In return for validating blocks, stakers receive tickets. For each block, 20 tickets exist, and 5 are randomly selected and assigned to stakers.
Decred handles governance through its dedicated Politeia proposal framework. The system is intended to encourage participation and support a more community-driven blockchain model. Through Politeia, proposals can be submitted, debated, and voted on.
The Decred blockchain also supports smart contracts and off-chain transactions, enabling developers to build applications on top of the network. Well-known projects created on Decred include the Decred Decentralized Exchange and Decrediton, Decred’s own crypto wallet. The wallet is offered for Windows, macOS, and Linux,
Decred enables atomic swaps, letting users trade tokens across different blockchains immediately without relying on a third party.
DCR rewards network participants who help secure the system, including both stakers and miners.
DCR can be traded on the CEXs and DEXs listed here. The most widely used platforms with the highest liquidity include Binance, OKX, MEXC Global, Gate.io, and KuCoin.
