IUCN is a membership Union made up of both government bodies and civil society organisations. It draws on the expertise, capabilities and global reach of over 1,400 Member organisations, along with the contributions of more than 17,000 experts, to give public, private and non-governmental organisations knowledge and practical tools to support human advancement, economic growth and nature conservation working side by side. IUCN serves as the global reference point for understanding the condition of the natural world and the actions required to protect it. Its specialists are grouped into six Commissions focused on species survival, environmental law, protected areas, social and economic policy, ecosystem management, and education and communication. Established in 1948, IUCN has grown into the world’s largest and most varied environmental network.
