NuCypher creates cryptographic infrastructure designed to protect the privacy of applications operating across the blockchain ecosystem. The project began in 2015, and later shifted toward blockchain-focused capabilities-especially smart contracts-in 2017.
Through this technology, developers can handle private data, as well as save and exchange sensitive information. In practice, the protocol introduces an additional layer to blockchains so developers can plug it into their apps and control access to confidential data. Use cases include secrets management and dynamic access control.
NU is the platform’s native cryptocurrency, with a total supply of 3885390082.
NuCypher has built two main categories of technology that are essential to how the platform functions. These are Umbral, an encryption approach, and Ursula, NuCypher’s node network. More specifically, Umbral supports user privacy by helping participants safeguard their data while still sharing it securely.
Data owners can authorize data recipients to decrypt content, and this is carried out using Ursulas that re-encrypt data. Ursulas don’t have direct access to the data themselves; their role is to help enable the unlocking process.
To run as an Ursula, participants must stake NU. They receive NU rewards for their participation, serving as an incentive for delivering network services.
NuCypher offers a wide set of applications due to its interoperability. This includes handling infrastructure secrets across different environments-for instance, storing encrypted secrets in backend systems while also managing who can access them. Secrets can include passwords and private keys.
The project can also support dynamic access control, enabling permissions to be granted and withdrawn for specific sets of data as requirements change.
NU can be traded on the CEXs and DEXs listed here. Among the most widely used venues with higher liquidity are CoinBase Pro, Uniswap V2, and Gate.io. NU’s price depends on the exchange you choose and broader market conditions. For the latest and historical NU market pricing, check the price charts on this page.
