Osmosis is a decentralized AMM built on the Cosmos network. A key objective is to broaden AMMs’ role beyond token swaps alone. In practice, it serves as an AMM DEX while also supplying developer tools to create personalized AMMs powered by liquidity pools. The network supports cross-chain activity using Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) technology.
OSMO is the native cryptocurrency of the platform, with a maximum supply of 1,000,000,000.
On Osmosis, users can swap, trade, and purchase tokens. It also lets users set a slippage tolerance, meaning a trade will fail if the price moves more than the chosen percent against them.
A central capability is creating liquidity pools on the Osmosis DEX with configurable, distinct settings. For instance, this may involve bonding curves, dynamic swap fee price adjustments, or multi-weighted asset pools. Osmosis aims to push AMM adoption toward more sophisticated market participants by offering these options.
Osmosis also provides AMM as a service, giving developers a way to modify existing AMM building blocks and adapt the underlying technology to their requirements.
The OSMO token is used to govern the Osmosis platform. OSMO holders who stake participate in protocol decisions, such as which tokens get listed, platform upgrades, and more.
Osmosis enables developers to design AMMs for a range of scenarios, including token sales, interchain staking, options markets, and additional applications within the Cosmos ecosystem.
Some notable examples of applications built using Osmosis technology include:
Slingshot - a trading platform Restake.app - an application that enables validators to automatically compound other users’ Osmosis staking rewardsAxelar - a permissionless network for developers to create cross-chain applicationsOSMO can be traded on the CEXs and DEXs shown in the list here. The most widely used venue with the highest liquidity is MEXC Global. OSMO’s price can differ by exchange selection and broader market conditions.
