About Songbird

Songbird runs as a Canary network within the Flare ecosystem. Flare provides a distributed network where decentralized applications can be deployed. Built on that same foundation, Songbird acts as a working blockchain where developers can try out features before they are released on the Flare mainnet. Flare Network is a Turing complete Federated Byzantine Agreement network, and it uses the Avalanche consensus protocol.

Songbird’s native cryptocurrency is SGB. It serves as both a test token and the protocol’s primary utility token. The maximum supply is 15000000000. A Canary network is different from a testnet because token supply is capped, while testnets are typically characterized by an unlimited supply.

What are Songbird’s key features and how does it work?

The goal of Songbird is to create a setting where changes and improvements for its related chain, Flare, can be tested and prepared ahead of mainnet deployment. This covers trials of updates to Flare’s architecture, F-Assets, and FTSO’s functionality. FTSO stands for Flare Time Series Oracle. After being voted on, it can also be used for testing approved governance upgrades and implementations.

Beyond testing, Songbird also supports developer teams in running more advanced experiments and growing community engagement before the Flare mainnet goes live. The idea is to help teams launch with greater confidence once their applications are fully tested and revised. It’s also important that Songbird’s network uses a consensus approach that is not the same as mining or staking.

Songbird additionally functions as a layer-2 protocol for blockchain networks including Bitcoin, Ripple, and Dogecoin, which do not support smart contracts. In this way, Songbird adds computational functionality to those networks and enables developers to build on top of their blockchains.
