Zcash is a cryptocurrency that came from the Zerocoin project, with the goal of enhancing privacy for Bitcoin users. The Zerocoin protocol was first refined and then reworked into Zerocash, leading to the creation of Zcash in 2016. Zcash protects the data inside shielded transactions by using zk-SNARKs, a new type of zero-knowledge cryptography, to confirm that transactions are valid while keeping the sender, recipient, and transferred amount confidential.
Zcash has a capped total supply of 21 million units, like Bitcoin. Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn serves as Zcash founder and CEO. The project’s founding group also includes cryptographer Matthew D. Green of Johns Hopkins University, and Roger Ver was among Zcash’s early investors.
